Every time Sofie Kapur opens her mouth, worlds spill out. Her solo project, Not Your Mother, eschews the navel-gazing ‘singer-songwriter’ stereotype in favor of a hard-driving, soul-drenched, garage-rock energy. Cutting etheral melodies with arresting introspection and earth-shattering vocals, Kapur commands her audience’s attention with every live set, even at the most casual of bar-back-room venues.

Brought up in NYC’s “Meet Me in the Bathroom”-era indie scene, Kapur cut her teeth performing at venues as storied as Arlene’s Grocery, Cake Shop, CBGBs, and the Bowery Ballroom. Her past collaborators include Guided by Voices drummer Kevin March, Grammy-winning engineer Carl Glanville, and Shudder to Think’s Craig Wedren. At a Madison-Square-Garden showcase in 2010, Jon Caramancia of the New York Times remarked upon a young Kapur’s “kinetic” lead vocals. Since then, the force of Kapur’s voice — literally and figuratively — has only accelerated.

After fronting multiple acts throughout her career, Kapur’s singular artistic vision has finally begun to crystallize in Not Your Mother, a stripped-down solo project where Kapur presents herself at her most vulnerable — and most unapologetic.
