European survey reveals cannabis outperforms conventional sleep medications with fewer side effects
The comprehensive Bloomwell Cannabis-Barometer, surveying 1,086 medical cannabis patients between December 2024 and March 2025, paints a compelling picture of how cannabis is transforming sleep therapy. Released in April 2025, this represents one of Europe’s largest studies on medical cannabis effectiveness for sleep disorders.
“For years, the public debate surrounding medical cannabis has often talked ‘about’ patients rather than ‘with’ patients,” explains Dr. Julian Wichmann, Specialist and CEO of Bloomwell GmbH. “Some patients even face blanket accusations of misuse, especially when it comes to seemingly ‘mild’ conditions like sleep disorders.”
But data shows these conditions are far from mild. Approximately 95% of respondents reported that their sleep disorders significantly impact their daily life and work, with over two-thirds indicating a severe impact. The cognitive impairments caused by lack of sleep substantially affect both personal and professional domains, creating a desperate need for effective solutions.
Cannabis Effectiveness vs. Traditional Treatments
The survey’s findings are striking: 95% of respondents rated medical cannabis as highly effective for treating their sleep disorders, with over 90% giving it the highest effectiveness ratings (4 or 5 on a 5-point scale).
Compared to over-the-counter sleep aids like valerian or melatonin, the results are equally impressive. A striking 91.2% of respondents found medical cannabis more effective than these non-prescription options. Nearly 93% had previously tried over-the-counter remedies with limited success, indicating these patients weren’t simply seeking cannabis as a first option.
Perhaps most compelling is the comparison with prescription sleep medications. Among the 83.5% of respondents who had already tried other prescription sleep medications:
- 68.6% reported falling asleep more easily with cannabis
- 69.9% experienced better sleep quality with cannabis
- 69.9% experienced fewer side effects with cannabis
This high percentage of patients who had previously sought medical solutions for their condition underscores the long-term suffering many endured before finding relief with cannabis.
Life-Changing Benefits
The impact of cannabis therapy extends far beyond improved sleep. Since beginning cannabis treatment:
- 85.8% reported improved quality of life
- 80% experienced reduced symptoms
- 73.2% saw improvements in their work life
- 41.9% were able to stop taking other medications
- Only 5.8% noticed no health improvements
“After just a few uses, I started noticing changes,” shares Björn D., a 38-year-old patient from Hanover, Germany, who began cannabis therapy in 2024. “I was finally able to sleep through the night—deeply and restfully. The constant tension in my back eased, and the pain became more manageable… That feeling of relief, of finally getting a piece of my quality of life back, was indescribable.”
Medical Cannabis Market Trends
The Cannabis-Barometer also tracked broader market trends, showing the medical cannabis industry’s rapid evolution. The variety of available products more than doubled within a year, with over 500 different products now available.
Pricing has stabilized between €8–9 per gram (approximately $8.50–9.50 per gram or $240–270 per ounce), keeping medical cannabis an affordable therapy option for self-paying patients. More affordable cannabis flowers (priced up to €9 per gram or about $9.50 per gram) make up the majority of prescriptions.
The market shows a clear preference for non-irradiated cannabis flowers, with their share steadily increasing. Meanwhile, THC content is rising, with flowers containing over 25% THC approaching half of all prescriptions.
Market growth remains strong, with March 2025 patient numbers on par with December 2024’s record high.
A Paradigm Shift in Sleep Therapy
“A year after the CanG (Cannabis Act), medical cannabis is the true success story in combating illegal markets and decriminalizing cannabis users,” notes Niklas Kouparanis, Co-Founder and CEO of Bloomwell Group GmbH. “The reclassification of medical cannabis has reduced costs and administrative burdens for all involved. Companies have passed these savings on to patients, leading to globally competitive pricing.”
For the millions suffering from sleep disorders, the survey provides encouraging evidence that cannabis might offer effective relief where conventional treatments have failed. As medical cannabis becomes more accessible and research continues to validate its therapeutic potential, patients have gained a legitimate, effective option for tackling one of modern life’s most pervasive health challenges.
The Cannabis-Barometer represents a significant step toward evidence-based understanding of what patients have been reporting for years: for some sleep disorders, cannabis may offer a better night’s rest with fewer drawbacks than traditional pharmaceuticals.
